The dinosaur statues I love were not there!
My heart nearly stopped as I stared at the spot:
For them to run off would make life too unfair!
I had to be wrong as I turned back to stare.
My husband just sighed as I told him this thought:
“The dinosaur statues I love were not there!”
I’d seldom seen statues like those two right there:
Old tools now repurposed as treasures long sought:
(For them to run off would make life too unfair!)
Fierce dragons now frozen in battle. – BEWARE!
Their absence must stem from nefarious plot!
The dinosaur statues I love were not there!
Then looking again, I saw THEY WERE STILL THERE:
I sagged in relief and my angst soon forgot.
(For them to run off would make life too unfair!)
Ridiculous rushing right into despair!
I cannot believe how this left me distraught:
“The dinosaur statues I love were not there!”
For them to run off would make life too unfair!

It will—SIGH!—probably never happen;
Well, not this side of heaven, anyway.
Of course, I can’t help dreaming of snappin’
Up an orphan pterodactyl someday,
Like other people might adopt a dog.
Desperate for a good home of its own,
Jealously studying all other pets,
Upset when this one or that is shown
Someone who has chosen to rescue it,
That lonely dinosaur waits now for me:
Looking hopefully for my deposit
Of cash and paperwork so it can see
Very soon an end to its loneliness,
Expecting food, hugs, and kisses to share.
I know our meeting will bring us both bliss,
Taking us both into each other’s hearts there.

I think this would make the most fun cartoon-y children’s book, set in an animal shelter, filled with all kinds of zoo animals, each with a sign (in the animal’s own handwriting) on the front of the cage that said, “Choose Me!” and with each animal sitting at a desk, writing a love letter to its future family on fancy stationery.
I apologize for posting this twice. It needed four major punctuation edits that I did not see until after it was posted. Then I had to also go back into a couple of files to make the changes there. Sigh. And I call myself an English major!

inWhereas we fear these vibrant beasts today,
Humans were not always on their buffet.
Expensive reproductions can’t portray
Nature’s glory in all its vast array:
Dinosaurs and the creatures on which they prey—
Reality was different that first day:
Animals back then had no feet of clay,
Gungho to destroy in bloody melee.
Oh, no! There was nothing to dismay:
Nothing Heaven’s harmony to betray.
How far we fell that grim yesterday!
Eden was safe before sin came to stay:
Adam and Even had been free to go play,
Relax, and enjoy a game of croquet
Together with tame animals—Hurray!
Sin changed all that: It led us astray.
World-wide sorrow and destruction held sway
Even among the animals. I pray
Resurrection comes quickly to parlay
Endemic fallenness—bright world gone grey,
Goodness dissipating—into payday
Of joy for tears, beauty for ashes. Someday
Our God will permanently make a way
Dragons again to His majesty display.

Yep. I have been watching Jurassic World again, which always takes me back to the Garden of Eden, where, I believe, dinosaurs and man lived in harmony. If I could, I would live there!

I cannot come to school ‘cause
My triceratops just broke his leg!
My good friend, Trike, had been my ride,
But he lies moaning on his side:
I’ll simply have to be excused
Until he’s fixed to walk again—
This trouble I would never choose:
I never want my friends in pain!
But, since mine is, I must stay home
To tend him and to doctor him.
In eight weeks, he may have a chance
To join me at the preschool dance –
Assuming he is healed and whole—
But these things I cannot control!
And so while my dear friends’s in need,
I’ll stay home while I learn to read.

Page fifty-seven of Dinosaurs, Unleashed
Is filled with a truly beautiful scene:
Children and their mother washing a beast,
Tenderly making the giant all clean,
United in a common task:
Rakish ceratopsian here submits,
Enduring with amazing grace this bath,
Obviously loving those who love him.
Facial expressions show he does not mind
Getting cleaned up. Embracing their soft touch—
Really, he would do anything for kind
And loving friends he trusts so very much—
Compassion flows between man and beast,
Encapsulating Heaven’s love and peace.

Dinosaurs, Unleashed is a special creation dinosaur book by Kyle Butt and Eric Lyons. It is filled with glorious illustrations by Lewis Lavoie. It is available directly from Apologetics Press, 230 Landmark Drive, Montgomery, Alabama 36117. At my request, my local Bible bookstore started carrying this regularly, and I have already bought more copies than I originally planned to buy.
Some years ago, before my Daddy lost his memory, he bought and mailed me a copy of Dinosaurs, Unleashed, and timed it to arrive on my birthday. That was the most exciting, best-loved birthday present I ever got. If I could, I would buy a column of these books to distribute to anyone who wants a copy. So, if I ever published a book that sold wonderfully well, this is where a good part of the profits would go. Here, and to The Voice of the Martyrs, and a few other worthy causes.
I was hoping that anyone who reads this poem would be inspired to buy this very special, special-creation dinosaur book. It may just become one of your favorites. : )

inI’d like my own triceratops
To romp and play with me.
I’d walk my pet triceratops
For everyone to see.
I’d ask my Friend Triceratops
To step on bugs for me,
And then we’d eat our BLT’s
Up high in leafy trees!
My Gentle Trike would watch my house
And stomp and yell and shout,
And scare intruders from their skins,
If they should come about.
Yep! Having a triceratops
Would be a JOY to me:
The best-est, most perfected pet –
As anyone can see!

As you can tell from this writing, I never quite grew up. I always suspected that might be the case, then had it confirmed some months ago while my son and I were Christmas shopping at a complex that offered donkeys and large goldfish for the shoppers to go visit. As the guide was telling us where to find them, he pointed out that they were on opposite corners of the compound, and I couldn’t help wondering aloud why that was: “So they won’t fight?” I asked. The poor guide blinked his confusion while I laughed myself silly, knowing he would never understand.
Someday, I would like to turn this poem into a beautiful children’s picture book, starring my grand-daughter as the narrator. I have a friend at church named Gwen who is an illustrator. But as we are both busy, that is a dream for another day.
Praying for you to find the joy God has for you today,
Gwennon

Depressions in the ground there call to mind
Inordinately large creations there
Not knowing how to get to safety where
Outrageous rainfall threatened every kind.
Such terror for the ones who fell behind!
Astonishing, the power of the waves!
Unknown escape from what would be their graves.
Renewed awareness when the diggers find
These fossils that were laid down in the mud:
Reminders of God’s judgment on the world –
And also of His grace through Noah’s Ark:
Corrupted world destroyed through world-wide Flood:
Kaleidoscope of pain, loss, death unfurled,
Survived by those who lived to disembark.

Did you know that there was no rainfall on the earth before Noah’s Flood? This is something I was not aware of until mid-high school. At a Christian camp (I think it was at the Summit Ministries camp in Colorado where I heard it the first time), one of the teachers pointed out that the Bible mentions early in Genesis that there was no need for rain because God had implemented an irrigation system using water vapor, but no rains. You can read about this in Genesis 2:5-6
And in other news, according to Dr. Carl Baugh of the Creation Evidences Museum of Glen Rose, Texas, “gopher wood” was not an actual type of wood, but rather was a special lamination process in which very thin layers of wood were glued up into a huge piece of lumber that became stronger than steel.
For years, this was a puzzle to me, because the Bible itself never explained it. But, in college, one of my Bible professors told us that if there is something we don’t understand in the Bible, we should just entrust it to God, and obey the parts we did understand. We were assured that there would be plenty of things we could understand even when we didn’t know it all (which, apparently, never comes in this lifetime). Later, another Bible teacher said, “Obedience unlocks the understanding.” That is to say, when you obey the parts of the Bible that you do understand, God rewards you with greater understanding of the rest of it. Conversely, if you refuse to obey the parts of the Bible that you do understand, over time less and less of it will be understandable to you, until the whole thing appears to be just a collection of folk tales and nonsense. So, don’t disobey yourself right out of Biblical belief. Belief in God is a gift to be cherished and carefully guarded.
Having said all that, I would love to return to the teachings of Dr. Baugh, whose teachings are accessible in several places online. Having given a cursory view of one of these places, it seems that Dr. Baugh is a bit of a controversial character to some people. But my experiences with Dr. Baugh have been only helpful, and I consider him to be one of the great mentors and protectors of the faith in my life. Without his teachings, I don’t know that I would have appreciated the importance of the creation world view, or some of the many evidences there are for that for those who are willing to seek them out.
Enough sermonizing for one post?
Praying for you to seek and find God through the beauties and wonders of His amazing Creation,
Gwennon

Dinosaur Friend of Mine, you don’t need me
Right now. The food you ate should settle. Let me go
And see what I can find you in the pantry.
Good food. I guarantee it. — You should know
Older, out-of-shape women like me are
Never as tasty as we may appear.
Do tell me how I can best serve you here!
Opportunity knocks with a new recipe:
Nab new, tasty food you’re going to love —
Outstanding flavors you never had before:
Take my chocolate chip cookies! Yep. Shove
Engaging, tasty morsels of flour and spice
Along your hungry palate! Now, isn’t that nice?
Treat yourself to another dozen. Or two!
Me? I have some pressing business to attend to:
Excuse me from your meal. — Let these sweets suffice!

This poem followed in the wake of a devastating disappointment that surprised me last week. I had thought that a one- or two-hour cry would clear the whole thing up. But it didn’t. Over the course of 30 hours, I fell into a pit of despair, which quickly filled to overflowing with tears that threatened to never slow down. After many prayers, and the prayers of many friends, the disappointment started to lift, and I imagined that life might, indeed, go on.
I couldn’t help asking God for a special favor though: if my current dream had to die, wouldn’t He, at least, give me some more new poems? Specifically, some really fun stuff both to read and to write?
Almost immediately, the title and the acrostic for this irregular sonnet started to take shape, and I watched myself writing words and lines, between school assignments at the kitchen table with my son. An hour after I had started writing, the poem was basically completed, needing only a small bit of editing later that night. This was a good surprise and was truly a gift from God.
