Precious friends we prefer right by our side:
On call with a helping hand or sweet smile.
Instead, our wishes often are denied.
Now this friend or another may just pile
Their things together and suddenly move.
It takes us by surprise and how we grieve!
Numbed and stumbling, we do survive. We knew
Gifts of friends might not always stay, but leave,
Tearing our hearts a bit in the process.
Our earthly hopes must be in Christ alone.
Joy comes from knowing God. Nevertheless,
Each soul here wants a friend to call their own.
So we do, until their loss makes hearts throb,
Uprooted. From heaven, only “on loan”,
Sharing God’s love, these friends did do their job.
