The battlefield is beautiful
And flows with many joys:
Friends we love, and family,
And every kind of toy.
But most of us see nothing more
Than surface things today
When so much more is happening
Than anyone can say.
No matter how I’ve framed these scenes before,
This brutal fact remains:
I’M IN A WAR.

My Gilead is peaceful now,
And quiet for a time.
God’s healing balms now cover me,
And everything’s sublime.
Now hidden well there prowls a FIEND
That wants to take control:
Both night and day his only goal:
The killing of my soul.
No matter how I’ve framed these scenes before,
This brutal fact remains:
I’M IN A WAR.

While some folks rest or float along
So gently down life’s stream,
Great multitudes are sinking fast—
Life isn’t what it seems.
They do not know that enemies
Now work to bring them down.
While all alone and helpless,
They just might lose hope and drown.
These weary crowds need kindly souls
To fight on their behalf:
To turn their eyes to Jesus
Our TRUE HEALER and LIFE RAFT.
No matter how we’ve framed these scenes before,
This brutal fact remains:
WE’RE IN A WAR.

Good soldiers, please wake up today,
And battle with our Lord.
He’s seeking souls to rescue:
With our help, He’ll rescue more.
Though comforts call, and promised ease,
Our battle’s not yet done.
For all our lives, we’re called to fight—
Let’s follow God’s dear Son!
No matter how we’ve framed these scenes before,
This brutal fact remains:
WE’RE IN A WAR.
No matter how we’ve framed these scenes before,
This brutal fact remains:
WE’RE IN A WAR.

Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all of God’s people.”

Whereas I would like for you to believe that I have really taken these verses seriously all my life, in fact, these have been verses I have mostly ignored, to my peril. So, today’s poem is really a wake-up call to myself. Sigh.
