Affection comes easy
When all life is well:
When people are pleasing,
Affection may swell.
But it’s not always truthful
And sometimes will fly
Toward harmful opinions
On which it can lie.

True love is not like that:
Though held in derision,
To love and love well
Is a constant decision.

Affection may come,
And affection may go,
And the ways it behaves
May lay wounded hearts low.
We’ll want to remember
When feelings are swelling
EMOTIONS MAY LIE,
Though they shout in the telling.

True love is not like that:
Though held in derision,
To love and love well
Is a cold, hard decision.
