Not yet.
Although I had been impatiently
waiting for a special surprise –
Several of us had.
But today when I arose,
full of joyful anticipation
for exquisite beauty and joy,
my sinking heart discovered
NO DIAMONDS:
No diamonds to brighten a dreary landscape
and shortening days,
No diamonds
to be molded into temporary yard art,
or frolicked in by perplexed and delighted puppies,
or blended into ice cream,
or slipped down the unsuspecting back of a sibling –
“All in good clean fun!”
On this morning,
as on so many others before it,
we find
NO DIAMONDS.
“Again?” demands my daughter.
This means she will not be skipping school today
to rejoice in a relaxed schedule
with other celebrants of unexpected gifts,
coming inside only long enough to
warm up with hot chocolate
before returning to delightful revels
in a wonderland that will not last.
No.
This morning
again
we find
NO DIAMONDS.
But there’s always tomorrow.
